Governance Committee
Purpose of Committee:
As the number of active Sustainable Arlington volunteers grows, more formalized governance and organizational structure will build the group’s capacity carry out more complex activities on behalf of the SA mission.The Infrastructure Committee serves as a temporary committee created to shepherd through organizational infrastructure improvements.
The structure and governance changes adopted in March 2010 were made in order to:
- Benefit the longevity of the group
- Prevent leadership burn-out and create a pipeline of leadership
- Organize and make efficient the process of proposing new projects for the group
- Increase outreach and our grow membership
- Align SA structure with image and expectations held by town officials and residents
- Improve web-site interface with group members, other town groups, and the public
- Keep better track of data and record the progress of various programs in town
- Publicize meetings and events of interest to SA membership
- Strengthen SA’s role as advisers to the town around ASAP, GCA and other carbon-reduction activities
- Match volunteer interest with meaningful and satisfying projects at SA
Next Steps:
This committee will draft policies to guide leadership decision-making, and rules and procedures to act as a reference for group activity, public communication, advocacy and endorsements.
Timeline:
- policies drafted and circulated in March, posted on SA website and alert sent to SA yahoo e-list two weeks prior to April meeting
- final draft of policies submitted for review by SA members before April meeting
- SA members in attendance at April monthly meeting will vote on what action to take on policies (adopt vs. revise)
UPDATE: A draft of polcies for SA was circulated to SA members in September, 2010 for review and discussion in October 2010 meeting. Feedback will be incorporated, and a final draft will be submitted in October and posted on this page for SA members to review. At the October 2010 monthly meeting, the policies will be voted into adoption or sent back for more revisions.
